Don't judge the book... - Sometimes you just want to grab some food to take home, and sometimes it might be Chinese that you crave. In all probability, you are resigned to an unsatisfactory collection of containers with food that bears little relation to the kind of meal you might enjoy in a good restaurant, but you put up with it for the convenience or for the low cost of the meal or...whatever.
If, however, you are lucky enough to be within reach of O.P in Putney, you can set aside all those preconceptions and choose from a menu that's a little shorter than average but full of good sounding dishes.
You'll have to accept that the appearance of the place doesn't inspire confidence, (and I can vouch for the fact that it hasn't changed much in 20 years) and if you're going to wait for your meal inside you'll be sitting on some unpadded benches listening to talk radio, but when you get round to opening the containers and getting stuck in you'll be glad you overlooked the idiosyncrasies of this funny wee counter.
Beef with tomatoes is a rich portion of good beef in a rich tomato sauce with loads of fresh tomatoes added at the end of cooking. Kung Po Chicken is flavoursome and is a riot of great textures with , green peppers, onions and a good quantity of chicken. Grilled dumplings are, unusually, filled with beef, and are very fine indeed.
I recently rediscovered O.P. and I'm glad I did. It's one of those places that looks so uninspiring that you wonder how they survive...until you eat the food.
There's a Sainsburys in the garage opposite should you need beers or wine, and the famous Half Moon pub is right there too, so a quick pint of Youngs is very do-able as you wait for your dinner.
Don't get TOO excited: it's still a takeaway counter and it's not going to be doing Royal China out of too much business, but £20 will feed 3-4 people if you choose wisely, and £30 will allow you to do a 'loaves and fishes' with your mates.
