Understated, stylish and consistent - Sometimes it's a refreshing change to visit a place you can't write much about. That's the Hoxton Grille. You see, it's got it pretty much right... the food is fresh and well prepared, the wine list is interesting and reasonably priced. It's got a fully stocked bar, lots of staff - polite and very professional (if a little slow at times), comfortable leather-lined booths and a large, low key reception lounge ideal for coffees and impromptu business meetings. In fact, I'd say there's a good chance the owners of the Hoxton Hotel (yes it's a Hotel restaurant even though you'd never guess, so seamlessly do the two facilities blend) tried to set-up a perfect business lunch restaurant.

You've got your ubiquitous chicken Caesar salad, pasta, grilled steaks, chicken Kiev, club sandwiches, burgers, sea-food, fish specials, creme brulee and sorbets... all well prepared examples of each. The wines are a mix of mid-range new world and Europeans, nothing too cheap or pricey. It's not a high-flying temple of gastronomy or an overpriced canteen, its solidly in the upper-middle range for price, quality and ambiance.

Make sure you book for a weekday lunch, try to book for a weekday dinner and turn-up feeling hungover on a Saturday morning and immerse yourself in a very well proportioned, non-greasy fry-up and a latte... rock solid. The only criticism I could find is in the Hoxton Grille's quest for consistency and quality it has achieved a certain conservatism which is at odds with the chic interior and vibrant bar. To put it another way... it might be wearing an Armani suit, but its underwear is definitely Marks & Sparks.

Ignore that last remark. It's one of the best business lunch venues in the city, underpants not withstanding. 10-03-08

A Ronseal Restaurant - This place does exactly what it says on the tin.

Almost don't need to write more but in case anyone considering going has never been out in Hoxton/Shoreditch before?!?...

The interior is the standard bare brick and glass, with a live DJ at the weekend. It has a large open plan dining room that manages reasonably well to avoid the pit-falls of such a set up and the music wasn't too loud to talk.
The coctails are well made and can be had at the bar while waiting for your table.
Once you get seated the menu is small but should cater for all tastes, usual modern british type of stuff. Trendy bangers and mash, steak, roast sea bass etc. These were all tried and declared universaly fine(damming with faint praise?) One slightly odd addition of chicken kiev to the menu (2 tables away had it) but no-one i was with would eat something containing that much garlic on a saterday night...

Now the issue I had with the Grille, the service while freindly, was slower than glaciation and erratic. All our main courses at once please! Not good.

The Grille is everything one would expect from an eatery on Great Eastern St. The extra 'e' in the name, the 'designer' interior, a live DJ to play background music, all fine. The question is whether 'fine' is good enough. 27-02-08
