Chelsea's best kept secret - Maybe it's because it is off the main drag (Pond Place - off Fulham Road next to Theo Fennell)? Maybe it's because it is in a basement and you can't see in from the street? Who knows why Bowler is not universally recognised as the best place for steaks and meat in London?
It has the look and feel of a nightclub and is that rarity, a genuine neighbourhood restaurant with top quality food and great service. And great cocktails from the South African bar manager with a happy hour that lasts two hours.
The food generally is exceptional quality. From the starters would recommend the Sri Lankan mussels, the hot salt squid, the asparagus and the charcuterie. Not all at once! Tempting as it is.
For main courses it is hard to get past the steaks. They trump Sophie's and Gaucho's by some distance. But only the local residents and hospital staff seem to know about it. Go figure. If you have a meat eating friend go for the chateaubriand with accompanying perfect Yorkshire Pudding. Having had this at Bowler then tried the equivalent at Sophie's there really is no contest. And the burger also must be the best in London (my BF confirms!). Can confidently say that it is better than any other burger in the area and the whole experience is so much more customer focussed than PJ's.
Price is hard to pin down - there are great set menus and competitively priced favourites like sausage and mash which put it firmly into ££ category. If you have the bigger steaks or the chateaubriand then it's £££s. But it's worth it...
