Spanish in London - Soho

The second restaurant from Sam and Eddie Hart (owners of Fino in Charlotte Street), Barrafina is a Spanish Tapas bar with a counter seating 25 people and a few tables and chairs outside during the summer - the Tapas is of the highest quality and the atmosphere busy.

Barrafina London Reviews

Tapas as a treat? - There are good tapas on offer here, the octopus particularly delicious and is the best I've tasted in London.

But... so many people have raved about Barrafina and it is so expensive that you kind of expect to be blown away by each dish and not all the choices are created equal.

The atmosphere also feels wrong, there's none of the rough and ready conviviality a tapas bar needs. It feels more trendy than homely. The price also counts against trying out dishes on a whim.

As a treat it's great but tapas as a treat? That seems wrong.

didn't live up to expectations - Everyone had been raving about Barrafina before I went there, becoming fans of the place on Facebook etc.

I went quite late and it was a bit disappointing because literally everything I ordered (down to the wine I wanted) was out of stock. In a way this is good, because they obviously get fresh ingredients every morning, but frustrating for a vegetarian with limited menu options to begin with.

If you're a meat eater then this place is great. My boyfriend loved the prawns. But vegetarians steer clear, especially if you're there late.

If you want to eat a reasonable hour then be prepared to queue as Barrafina doesn't take bookings - there isn't space to!

Best tapas outside Spain - I cannot speak highly enough of barrafina. The only problem is the queue. The atmosphere is very cool, everyone sits perched around a bar as you watch your tapas be prepared. The tapas is to die for, super fresh seafood teamed with all the usual suspects such as chorizo and croquettas. Read a more indepth review here: http://www.gourmet-chick.blogspot.com

A bit pricy but nice... and trendy - Barrafina is a nice place. It was too busy to eat when I went so I just had some good red wine and a few starters... stuffed olives and ham (the famous jamòn serrano).
The bill said £31 for the 2 of us... I wouldn't call it cheap but you can't demand too much if you go in a pretty trendy place in the heart of Soho, can you?

Environmental health - I have to say that I was very shocked last night when attending Barrafina in Soho. My partner and I sat in the window area near the end wall next to two people furiously completing paperwork. It took several minutes to figure out that both of them were members of staff and several more minutes to figure out that they were retrospectively completing the fridge temperature monitoring charts.

I actually sat there and saw them complete the whole of Octobers chart before they cottoned on to the fact that they had an audiance. They weren't embarrassed (as they should be) but were brazen in the fact that they said to me, "We didn't have time!". What sort of establishment was I eating in?

Apart from failing to comply with every environmental health instruction on fridge temperature controls they are also committing an act of fraud! The temperature control charts are a legal requirement and anyone who puts there name to a falsely completed chart deserves the full force of the law.

I am not exagerating or wrong in what I saw. I am disgusted that an apparently 'good' establishment cannot comply with BASIC environmental health requirements and then blatently falsifies records in full public view.

I am astounded!

Don't be afraid of the garlic - We finally made it to Barrrafina in Soho. Suprisingly for a Friday night it wasn't too busy. We got seated within 15 minutes and the queue never grew longer than 6 people. The food was fabulous. The portions are small (well it is tapas!) but the ingredients are of a very high quality. And great if you love seafood! We had langoustines, gambas, sardines and clams. Plus a lovely platter of spanish meats. Yummy yummy. Definitely worth the money and fun watching the buzz of the kitchen and fellow diners at the bar. It's been added to my favourites.
