Mangal Ocakbasi London Reviews

mmmmmm Mangal - I have been to this vibrant Turkish restaurant twice now and will certainly be returning in the future.

On both occasions, I have shared the special meat platter, which consists of lamb chops, lamb cutlets, whole quail and chicken. The meat is cooked beautifully. The tender lamb makes you quiver in delight with each bite and the unusual but delicious quail goes down just as nicely.

Although on my second visit, they had run out of rice (i was slightly disappointed by this) I was asked to give the spicy red couscous a try instead. I'm glad i did. It was a lovely replacement. Not too spicy but fluffy and flavoursome.

Another reason I love the place, is for the 'bring your own' policy, which means you can take your own wine/beers along with you.

The staff do make you feel as though they couldn't care less whether you're there or not - but hey, they are constantly running around like headless chickens, delivering fresh Pide to tables and clearing empty plates.

There is a buzzing yet relaxed atmosphere in Mangal Ocakbasi. Go and enjoy it!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME - OMG OMG OMG OMG why haven't I been here before? How come no-one told me about this place? Its GOLD.

Ocakbasi supposedly means open charcoal grill or something and I can confirm that they do indeed have a massive grill with charcoals in it.

The decor is really simple, perhaps a bit ikea but hey its a restaurant and if you're coming for tips on how to decorate your living room you're going to be dissapointed. If however you're coming to eat some meat gilled with charcoal then you have arrived my friend.

This is how it went down - 2 people, 1 order of Patlican Salata (Lightly grilled aubergine, peppers chopped & topped with yoghurt & butter) 1 order of Pirzola (grilled Lamb Chops) Special Karisik (selection of kebabs with quail and salad), 2 cokes and a basket of bread - BOOM!

The Patlican Salata was amazing, tasted a bit like a mexican salsa, quite spicy but not too much. The lamb chops were amazing, not quite as good as Tayyabs but really realy good. The Karisk was some Kofta, some cubed lamb, a lamb rib or steak or something, some chicken and half a quail. All of it was tasty but I was too full by the end of it to eat all the quail. The salad that it came with was massive and actually declicious - loads of gherkins and cabbage and carrots.

To finish with we both had a sweet tea which is kind of like a shot of hot tea that someone has been stewing for a couple of hours but seeing as this is how I like my tea I was in heaven.

All in all the bill came to less than £30 which considering how much we both ate is rediculous.

This is now one of my new favorite places to eat - full stop.

Turkish Town treats - In an area famed for its Turkish restaurants it can be difficult to pick out a good one, and Mangal is certainly a case of looking off the beaten track. In this case the beaten track is a side street off Stoke Newington Road (the continuation of Kingsland Rd), and not that far down it either, but nevertheless Mangal is not the most obvious Turkish restaurant to pick in the area.

On your way in it's better to have a look in the chiller cabinet than just rely on the menu... skewers of lamb and chicken in various forms, kofte, pousin, aubergine all await selection. And don't miss the grilled tomatoes and mild green chillis which are charred before your eyes at the waist height open grill that dominates the restaurant.

Mangal is a serious foodie restaurant with a local rep that any restaurant would kill for, as reviews on the walls from papers as far afield as the New York Times show. And if the queue that snakes out the door proves to much then you can try the bigger Mangal II around the corner on Stoke Newington Road where the artists Gilbert and George are seen eating almost every night.

Oh, and it's BYO so stop by the local shop for some Efes beer before heading over.
