The Brackenbury serve a variety of modern English dishes including salads, omelettes, fish, lamb and wild mushroom dishes. They also provide a vegetarian menu and have a seating area on the terrace. Pipes and cigars are not permitted. They can cater for private parties of up to 60 people. Booking in advance is required.

Clawing their way back - London, as with many large cities, is a collection of villages that have been over run by the metropolis. Chelsea, Fulham, Vauxhall… they all once stood alone, rural and supplying food for the growing city.

Hammersmith is no different, and in the back streets you can find Brackenbury Village, so called by the estate agents of course, but accurate in describing the isolated feel to the area.

At its heart is The Brackenbury, a well-regarded restaurant that straddles the line between destination restaurant and a neighbourhood one. It’s changed owners a few times but nevertheless continues to deliver good Anglo-continental fare.

The Eggs Benedict were fantastic, with perfectly poached eggs sitting on bacon and muffins and doused in creamy hollandaise. The hamburger and omelette also got good reports, and our dietary constraints companion was well catered to by being able to order off-menu; his dover sole came well, if simply, pan fried with new potatoes and steamed vegetables.

The Brackenbury doesn’t seem to have the impact it once did but a visit there is a meal in a safe pair of hands.
