Tay Do Cafe London Reviews

Hair in soup! Bad service too - I hate to leave negative reviews but in this instance I was so disgusted I can't say anything else. My fiance and I popped into Tay Do for a bite to eat one night. I wish we'd picked a different restaurant instead. It was the worst meal we have ever had. Or not had... He discovered two hairs in his dish after just a few mouthfuls of his food. This obviously put him off... if hygiene standards were so low that he found that in the first two mouthfuls who knows what else might be wrong! He sent his dish back, we both nibbled at mine for a while. We didn't even get through half of it. The staff were very blase about him sending the dish back and didn't even apologise. In fact they seemed disgruntled with us as though we were trouble causers! We asked four times for water only for it to come with the bill. The bill was charging us for the dish we sent back too! They took this off but refused to give us any other discount even though we hardly touched my meal because we put off. They said they had knocked off the cost of our tap waters out of courtesy then walked off and waited for us to leave. Well that's nice! They didn't charge us for warm water from a tap that came with the bill when we'd asked from the start of our meal. The food was horrible. The staff were rude, and the fact that they seemed to care so little about our meal makes me wonder how unhygienic their kitchens must be. Is it standard practice for hairs (and who knows what else may be lurking!) to appear in their meals I wonder. They pack people in too tightly too. They tried to sit us almost in the doorway before agreeing to let us have a table at the back. The place seemed ver popular but I'm sure this is because of the convenient BYO policy and nothing else. It wasn't even that cheap when you think about it... I'm local to the area but I certainly won't be returning. There are far nicer, cleaner(!) restaurants down this road and in the surrounding area.

Don't judge a book by its cover - If my friends didn’t convince me, I would never get inside. It‘s simply not this type of place that attracts with interior design. Anyway, you can’t judge a book by its cover, can you?
The place isn’t too big and thanks to specific colours you have an impression that you’re in a bar at a Polish railway station or a canteen for homeless people,…But the most important thing is that food there is simply delicious!
Tay Do Café has hundreds of items on its diversified menu. I think that you can taste absolutely everything from Vietnamese kitchen there. We took starters that looked as a main course and then we went for different combination of meat. My friend was jealous of my beef cubes as he wasn’t satisfied with his duck but asparagus soup was a great choice for both of us. We kept on eating and eating and eating….and we paid about £35 for three of us!
At the beginning, we thought that a waiter had problems with communication but he was more than helpful and served us really quickly. Oh, and apart from that, he gave us glasses for wine we brought in!

I love this place - It's not a romantic-type restaurant, it's more cafeteria-ish, think bright lights and not too comfortable tables. The food is brilliant though, I recommend the roast duck soba noodles with pak choi, and it's BYOB! I have never ever spent over £10 per head here and I always leave feeling stuffed. I eat here about once a fortnight.

Yummy Cheap and Yummy again - Loved it loved it loved it. The food was so tasty we practically inhaled it... make sure you try the caramelised catfish you'll want to lick your plate. And given the uber casual setting, why the hell not?

When your local thai is so cheap'n'cheerful and also happens to be super tasty and not drowned in oil, you'll be going back. I definitely will!

cheap! - If you're looking for a good quality, quick, and damn cheap Vietnamese meal, then Tay Do is for you.

I can admit that it's not michelin star quality food but in saying that, I've never been to an exquisite Vietnamese restaurant...nor heard of one (unless someone can "Tip" me in the right direction). Overall, the food is very good and this well-oiled machine restaurant will bring it to you within 10 minutes of ordering.

If you pay more than £8 per person, that is because you ordered a soft, drink, 2xentrees and threw a tip in for good measure.

Enjoy!

May I have some veg w/ my oil? - I read the other two reviews so thought I'd give it a try and based on those reviews, had high expectations of the place. I was a little disappointed.

Yes it's cheap (£35 for 4 people). The place is bustling; very simple decor and packed to the rim with patrons. It's a food factory - in and out as quick as you can say "Pho".

That type of restaurant is fine, but I would have expected the food to be better. The prawn and pork summer rolls were very tasty, but the peanut dipping sauce wasn't; too much plum sauce and too sweet. All the main dishes were extremely oily, and all the meat was either mystery-like or deep fried, including the tofu over rice noodles.

I think this is a place where you have to stick to the simple dishes such as Pho, Bhun and spring rolls. Otherwise, you may get something of a surprise.

What the Pho? - 275 menu items! Are you kidding me? Why can’t they just say “Pho with choice of meat” instead of listing every possible permutation? The only thing busier than the menu is the place itself, absolutely teaming with people, and queuing on the pavement. Anyway I didn’t get past the first page before I gave up and told someone else to order whatever is good. Luckily everything there is damn good! I especially like the chicken that comes in the little lettuce cups. I also love the Pho, but then I think Pho is good pretty much anywhere. The price is right too, generally between £5 - £6 per dish. Maybe best of all, it’s BYOB and you can get some decent stuff at the off license just next door. Overall maybe the best Vietnamese in town.

Serious Bang for Your Buck! - I've updated this Tip after having eaten at Pho - this place pales in comparison. It is still good food and dirt cheap and they do run a tight shop but Pho is far superior....

It's a tiny restaurant, very unassuming but totally serious about the quality of their food! The food was good and it came out in like 2.2 seconds! They run a seriously tight operation! It was packed with loads of people with a queue outside. You can bring your own wine too (there is a £1 corkage fee). If a friend didn't recommend this, I never would have gone and would have seriously missed out on some fabulous and cheap grub! For 6 of us, it came to only £50. It's a very busy place so be prepared to eat in tight quarters and feel the high speed energy of their operation.
