You can take it with you - One of my favourite things about London is its complete lack of an open container law. This may seem extreme for some of you non-Americans out there, but in the US it’s illegal to roam the streets while drinking alcohol. I know- shocking but true. So every time I emerge from a bar carrying pint, glass of wine, or occasionally cannonballing that magnum of champagne, I always feel a little lawless yet privileged. Like New Yorkers and jaywalking, getting blasted on the move is a Londoner’s privilege and right.
I mention this timesaving and inebriating pastime as it salvaged Rosa’s from from a completely scathing review. See, after sitting outside at the Westbourne up the street, my friend and I decided to brazenly make off with our bottle of red wine and glasses and head over for dinner. Rocking into Rosa’s on a Saturday night without a reservation is risky enough, and while the BYOB idea seemed genius at the pub, I questioned my taste level as we sauntered in.
Thankfully, Rosa’s was so jammed packed and understaffed, that I wondered if they were actually secretly relieved that we have eliminated a step for them. If only the whole meal had been self serve. I think the problem was the two huge birthday parties that had taken over the room... and Rosa’s is not a big room. It created a noise level, temperature, and general sense of chaos not dissimilar to a house party gone horrible wrong. Remember in the movie Weird Science when Wyatt's house gets totally trashed? And then Chett gets turned into a giant toad? This was not too far off. Well, maybe not the toad part.
While the starters arrived in one piece, they were uninspiring. Overly dry grilled calamari (more of a squid jerky really) and squash/sweet potato soups that was overwhelmed with too much coconut milk. Our main courses may several trips around the dining room in the server's hands, and at one point landed on another table that that had clearly finished before heading our way. My corn fed chicken was fine, but also on the dry side. Rosa’s is a fan of head-on shellfish. I’d say try the pint of prawn just for the spectacle of a beer glass arriving full of boiled beady eyed shrimps. It was oddly high fashion. Irving Penn does W2.
Sign. I so wanted to like Rosa’s. Maybe if I bring Kelly LeBrock next time she will make it all better.
