The More Things Change... - Several years ago, I introduced some American friends to the joys of a Full English as a hangover cure. It was here at the Black Lion, with its dingy cups, dingy plates, dingy decor and refreshing beer that my mates learned the magic of fat, starches, more fat, and beer as the perfect way to start the "morning after." The atmosphere was dank, depressing, and oh so English.

So bringing my wife for her inaugural tour of my old stomping grounds of Bayswater, we stopped by the Black Lion for a couple of pints.

My, have things changed. The place is clean. It's shiny. There's trendy music. A young crowd actually bothers to show up and party.

In short, it's not at all the grotty little pub that I wanted to show off. And while that's probably much better for business, it wreaked havoc on my sentimentality. And, as you know, all businesses must cater to ME!

It's not all doom and gloom (or brass and lacquered wood, as it goes). The outdoor terrace works very well with the (non-)smoking laws, meaning that unlike most of the pubs I like, I don't have to go through a rugby scrum just to get past the wall of smokers clogging up the sidewalk and the front door. Smokers actually have their own space, leaving plenty of room to get to the primary business of quaffing pints.
