A second visit? - We finally got bored of our usual locals and decided to mix it up a bit so we're trying some new places. Our first was La Collina, which we ventured to for dinner with friends on Saturday night. It was our first visit and it might well be our last.
Not because the food wasn't ok - it ranged from bland pumpkin soup, to decent seabream, to amazing lamb chops. Tiramisu and chocolate desserts were good too. Not because the prices weren't reasonable, although we were a bit surprised that 3 out of 4 of us attracted an extra charge to the set dinner. But because the room just had no atmosphere despite being full, and because the staff just were all wrong. They seemed to be an odd mix of trying too hard/inexperience (a terrible pause when the waiter brought the bread basket and couldn't work out where to put it - why?) and the whole thing just made us feel uncomfortable. It wasn't helped by the two loud crashes during the night as clearly some crockery incident had happened in the kitchen.
This could be a great little local but it needs to employ some warm and friendly and (most importantly) experienced staff and maybe play with the music or lighting to help the atmosphere along. Sadly, life's too short and the competition's too good so I doubt we'll be going back anytime soon.
