According to McGee art gallery,York - A contemporary art gallery but its not called artspace anymore its called According to McGee. When we looked it had all the best from the university graduates of 2011, the show was called New Visuality. Some of the work is really out there and some of it is safe, but it's all pretty good. It's good to see an art gallery like this in York, too many art galleries look the same all over the UK but this one had a real unique look to it. We bought a tiny ceramic figure, a good souvenir of our trip to York.
York is such a good place to go for beers - we went to Blue Bell and Golden Ball. The next day we looked for more art galleries and there were a few but I have to say According to McGee is the best out of the lot as it made me feel I had really visited a proper city and not a big village which happens sometimes when you go to a city like York.
Long may independent art galleries like According to McGee continue!

Surprising - We visited York last October. We're New Yorkers. A girl in the Tourist Office told us, after we'd asked about independent art galleries, that 'The Artspace' was worth looking at.
Well, it so happened that our visit dovetailed with the appearence of a New York Conceptualist Poet, Kenneth Goldsmith. Odds on that! The performance was really pretty wild, with a packed audience crammed against the white walls of the tiny art studio. Seriously, it was like something out of an underground Berlin nightspot! The owners seemed pretty cool but preoccupied: the female owner was heavily pregnant and abt to give birth anyday. Check out Kenneth Goldsmith's site, he's the best.
The Artspace is like something you'd find in Queens, or Convent Garden, or St Germain - it doesn't seem to try and please the traditional types - no mean feat in an ancient town like York! anyway, we bought a painting for our hosts, and they love it. If you want to try something more continental, go to the artspace.
