Bad desserts! Nice everything else - I had never heard of the Lost Society before last night, but apparently on a weekend there are queues to get in here. It’s quite tricky to get to (fitting name?) but then I find that most things in Wandsworth/Clapham are. It’s more bar than restaurant and I expect on a Friday night drunken people will be throwing shapes on the dancefloor-ish area downstairs like crazy fools. The décor is burlesquey (I know that’s not a real word but you know what I mean) and the lighting is too – by that I mean candlelight; reading the menu is quite tricky.
It’s average price but throughout the summer they are doing a deal Mon-Thurs (I think) that is £20 for two courses and a cocktail. The cocktail list you can choose from is quite standard (Sex on the Beach, Moscow Mule, Strawberry Daiquiri, Singapore Sling etc) but the extended non-offer list is pretty good.
The veggie starters were quite uninspiring (cous cous or garlic soup) so I went for main and dessert. A lot of the meat-eaters also chose the same way. My friend was really tempted to get the prawn cocktail, but was glad she didn’t when she saw that it didn’t come in a martini glass (the horror!). I had the Lost salad which was really really good apart from the fact I couldn’t really see what I was eating. It had grilled aubergine and tempura courgette flowers which pretty much made my day. Apparently the crab cakes were really good (I stole a few of the accompanying chips).
I have to note that my sweet tooth was a little disappointed. My friend had a forest fruits cheesecake and I had some vanilla ice-cream profiteroles. The cheesecake was average and the profiteroles, well, ice-cream was too cold so not enjoyable to eat and it came in a sea of ghastly basil sauce that err, tasted like pesto. WHY?!?? It sounds like the sort of thing Ramsay would have to iron out on Kitchen Nightmares. I didn’t see that bit on the menu (because of the dark) otherwise I would have gone cheesecake. There are some desserts that just shouldn’t be messed with.
