Bravo Mes Amis! - Maybe it was because it was cold and wet and windy outside, but I prefer to think that it was because they've got all the elements of the mix right, with true continental flair. From outside the high ceilings, huge glass picture windows and awnings along all the exterior frontage, and all the warm wooden surfaces, floors, furniture and big blocks of rustic reclaimed brick walls, welcome you in, and create a great atmosphere once you're inside. The place was quite busy, but you don't feel like you're right on top of the next table, so we could talk without feeling our neighbours were unavoidably subjected to eavesdropping. The waitress was so sweet and pleasant, and the manager, who even took the time to wander over and personally ask us if everything was to our satisfaction, was amiable and courteous - and all we had was a soup, a desert, and a moccachino. Next time I'll push the boat out a bit more! I had already eaten but my companion was a bit peckish, so she ordered the carrot & lentil soup which looked and smelled so good I had to have a taste. It was truly delicious. I ordered a slice of the chocolate bombe and a moccachino to keep her company even though I wasn't hungry. Again, magnifique! The bombe was intensely chocolatey with a creamy velvety texture, but not so sweet that it ever became too rich - we ended up fighting over the last few mouthfuls! The moccachino came in a bowl, which was great for warming my chilly hands. The price was the best surprise of all, less than I would have expected to pay in one of those coffee-shop chains that are taking over the world (you know the ones I mean). I will definitely be back to sample more of their simply presented, but quality organic offerings.
