Kettners London Reviews

Lost its fizz... - In follow up to my past visits review, I popped back here to the bar for an afternoon of champagne and was rather disappointed. Kettners has undergone a transformation, having changed owners a while back. Gone is the clubby private-members bar feel, replaced with modern mismatched tables and chairs – a bit like an Ian Schrager hotel. Not sure I’m keen on the new transformation. I quite liked the deep leather sofas and the old skool feel about the place. Worse though is the fact that the low mark-ups on champagne are no more, now replaced with the prices that you would see in a 5* hotel – such a shame as that was the key attraction with Kettners. Our bottle of Billecart-Salmon Rose NV was £95 on this visit (plus service charge!!). And the waitress was very unprofessional - appearing with the chip and pin machine before we'd even had a sip to drink. Ok we were here for a celebration and chose to pay this price, but this is a huge difference from our visit last year where the same bottle cost £56. I won't be back.

Sparkle and fade - It's strange that I've probably walked past Kettners a million times (I'm at Cafe Boheme about once a month) but I never noticed it until I was going specifically there. We had a voucher for a free champagne and slice of sweet/savoury tart so we thought we'd go check it out.

The waiter definitely took a liking to my friend and was a little too familiar, which you kind of expect in the kebab shop - not in an establishment like Kettners.

I think it's been recently refurbed (hence the freebies), and while the ambience is nice (very old school glamour), the chairs in the champagne bar remind me of being in a shoe shop or some other bar in Avery Row (all quilted, unmatched and chaise longue action). However they do have some cool booths which you can curtain off - to be in the complete darkness!

The tart was lovely and the champagne was lovely. The menu in the dining room is very French. However, vegetarians be warned - the food menu is pretty much all meat/fish apart from a couple of tarts.

Did Oscar Wilde go to McDonalds? - Kettners is the legendary location where Oscar Wilde used to entertain his rent boys, and looking around the multiple dining rooms it does certainly at least feel of that era. However, in Mr Wilde's time I don't think that the restaurant at this location was actually none other than the middle class McDonalds. Yes, apart from the higher prices, the menu is a very slightly modified version of the Pizza Express menu. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but just know what you're getting in for!

Ultimately this place is all about the atmosphere and its unbeatable location in the heart of Soho. Unfortunately, I've had some bad experience with the waiters though. They can be surly with a definite couldn't careless attitude that means I couldn't care less about tipping them. And once I waited so long for my bill that we just walked out.

Perhaps a visit to Kettners for a glass or two of champagne in the front bar may be enough if you don't care to get such surly service. However, there's just something classic about this place that just oozes history and evokes some of what it feels like to be a Londoner.

Fizzle - Kettners is a great all-round place if you're a fan of bubbles(and who isn't frankly). They have an extensive selection of vintage and non vintage bottles, with *fairly* reasonable markups: My bottle of Billecart-Salmon Rose NV was £56 - buy it in a shop and it's around £42. Although often very busy in the evenings, it's perfect during off-peak times: a great pre-theatre drop in, or great to while away an indulgent mid week afternoon. Kettners is also great if you have relatives in tow, and don't want to take them anywhere too trendy in W1.
I've never eaten in the restaurant, but upstairs is a warren of private dining rooms, which looks great fun for birthdays or other parties.
The champagne bar surrounds are very relaxing - a bit like an old school Gentleman’s club: wall panelling and lots of low leather armchairs and a bar area with high tables and stools. Also an excellent place to bring friends with big wallets and recent lottery winners: someone's got to buy that bottle of Bollinger Nebuchadnezzar....
