Le Gavroche is an upmarket French restaurant located within 47 Park Street Hotel, offering classic dishes created by chef Michel Roux. The cellar produces a wide selection of wines and there is a set lunch menu. There is an inflexible dress code for gentlemen: shirt, jacket and tie. An exquisite private dining room is available, seating between 8 and 20 people with its own reception room and cocktail lounge. The restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars and continues to be a gourmet's delight.

Le Gavroche London Reviews

The middle Michelin child. - I've eaten at a lot of one star establishments and i've eaten at one or two three star joints and they have surprised, angered and joyed in almost equal measures.

This is the first two Michelin starred place that i've eaten at and I can honestly say that middle child syndrome applies not only to the human race but to the restaurant business.

This place is unashamedly French and a little run down. Walking into the restaurant the faded grandeur made me feel like we had stepped back in time to the 40s. I half expected the place to be stuffed to the gills with jackbooted Nazi officers drinking their way through the cellars and paying little attention to the food.

So to the food, well it would be stating the bleeding obvious to say that the cuisine is French. Cut each dish straight down the middle and the Tricolore is staring defiantly in your face. This is Monsieur Escoffier et Monsier Roux Senieur through and through.

We went for the Menu Exceptionell and I have to say that whilst very very good, exceptional is not how I would describe the meal.

Eight courses, all immaculately delivered to our table (the waiters outnumbered the diners 2:1 on each course) and we started off with a scallop dish with a spaghettini of root vegetables and a ginger nage that was delightful, light, perfectly cooked scallops in the shell with a rich, yet airey ginger sauce set up the palette perfectly.

As we marched on through the menu we were delivered the signature Roux twice baked cheese souffle where I am happy to say that it lived up to the legend. Then came the highlight of the meal, a slab of foie gras with a small spring roll of duck served atop a berry coulis. Oh lord, this in one plate cemented Le Gavroche's place in the restaurant illuminati. It was rich and unctuous, yet light and immensely satisfying.

From here the menu took a downward turn and formulaic cooking by Michelin numbers presented itself plate by plate. Sea bass, check. Spring lamb (a bit early even for the Pyrenees), check. Neither dishes impressed.

Dessert came in two phases, the first wowed, the second snoozed. Pineapple sashimi served with fresh caramel donuts and mint hit my palette in perfect harmony. Yes, I could hear The Beloved singing Sweet Harmony in the back of my mind as I expertly sectioned the donut into five pieces to ensure I got all three tastes in one go. But the chocolate dish that then turned up was a lazy lazy bavarois with the tiniest hint of coffee. Yawn.

So please don't think that you won't have a great meal at Le Gavroche, you really will. But I have to say that this place is the embodiment of lazy, complacent Michelin cooking. You got two stars many years ago, why try harder.

Personally if I want French food by numbers, I'll take that in France. Michel Roux Jnr. is a tour de force that seems to have lost his spunk. I hope he finds it once again.

The best restaurant in London - If you're looking to really impress your dinner date, then you'd be hard pushed to find somewhere more exquisite than Le Gavroche.

Fabulously French, the food is second-to-none, the staff make you feel like royalty, and the wine cellar is vast.

But one of my favourite things about this place is that you can have a very reasonably priced lunch here during the week at around £40 each including three courses and wine. Definitely worth booking a day off for.
