Reassuringly expensive pub grub - Located on a corner of Lower Richmond Road, between Putney and Barnes and perfectly located for either chilling out on Putney Common or catching the 22 bus,is the Spencer Arms; once a den of iniquity but now the very model of rectitude since being bought and revamped by Jamie Sheriff and his merry band.
Inside, it's a big, old-fashioned looking boozer, with much mis-matched but comfy looking furniture and a bar that features a great range of beers and lagers as well as Aspell's cider and Guinness. A closer inspection shows a fabby range of wines at decent, though not bargain, prices.
Food is offered at lunchtime (12.00 - 2.30) and in the evening from about 6.00. A daily changing menu features light meals and snacks through to full-on meals, desserts, British cheeses and such.
Prices for the food are a little on the high side of what you'd expect in a pub, but the ingredients are all brilliantly sourced and of fantastic quality, prepared with a deft touch and more than a few interesting twists on old favourites.
There's usually a steak and chips, with a variety of cuts being offered depending on availability of good beef. This is a revelation! Beautifully cooked and seasoned steak with a generous portion of perfect hand-cut chips and a great little panache salad as garnish.
Another offering that regularly features is fish and chips. Again, the chips are perfect and the fish (the market dictates what fish is on) is cooked to be moist and succulent, with a light crispy batter. At around £11 it's not cheap, but it is as good as I've had anywhere that doesn't feature a beach on the doorstep.
Cassoulets sometimes appear on the blackboard; there's often a seasonal risotto, lighter dishes range from things like Welsh Rarebit (done the way you know it should be) through to sauteed ducks' hearts, with a fair selection to choose from in between.
The place gets busy during the evening and at weekends (and if you don't relish sharing your afternoon with many a middle-class family with the obligatory pushchairs and noisome toddlers then it's probably best to avoid Saturday or Sunday lunch), but weekday lunchtimes are often very quiet indeed, and neither the food nor the service (friendly and efficient for the most part) suffer for this one bit.
Expect to spend about £25 - £35 a head for a full meal with a glass of wine or beer or about £12 for a decent lunch with a drink.
