OK, I admit it - I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've been to a restaurant with a name like Spaghetti House. There's a story to it. It was late. I just got out of the theatre. The now ex-girlfriend was hungry. Everywhere else was closed. Christ, I had to do something...
Spaghetti House's name is a throw back to a more innocent, and less cosmopolitan, age. The chain is now over fifty years old and though certainly not adventurous, the menu caters to a certain need for the old favourites of Italian cooking.
The Melanzane alla parmigiana was one of the best I've ever had, I kid you not. Creamy aubergine with the right balance of tomato and mozzarella, baked to golden perfection. The pasta we had was also commendable. Well cooked, al dente, and well sauced.
Spaghetti House might not ever be a destination restaurant but the more snobbish diner shouldn't be put off just by the name. After all, it's been doing something right for the last fifty years.
