Al-Dar I London Reviews

A mixed mixed grill - I was out getting to 'better know a borough' along the Edgware Road with some very pleasant company. There are a lot of middle eastern dining options on Edgware Road, and having tried Maroush and Beirut Express before we took a punt on Al-Dar.

Saying the layout is canteen style would be putting it mildy. Its very basic, although there is nothing wrong with that if the food is tasty and good value right? Of course no beer, much to my companion's dissapointment, and as hard as he tried he couldn't turn water into beer (or wine even).

Two of us chose the mixed grill - chicken and lamb shwarma with hommus. My hubby had a lamb shish kebab and our 4th diner went for lamb shwarma and chicken liver sandwiches. Except our friendly waiter interpreted this as lamb and chick liver 'portions' which came on a plate and cost more. We couldn't decide if the confusion was accidental or not.

Overall the food was good. The mixed grill was delicious - the meat tender and the hommus nice and garlicky. That's all I ate - why adulterate it with pitta bread and condiments. I heard the other diners huff at the spicy chilli sauce but it got the thumbs up too. The chicken liver looked dry but was given an 'ok'. Lamb kebab scored points from my carniverous hubby.

So I would rate the food well but... value wise its a bit expensive for a school canteen environment and a simple plate of food. The mains were all over £10 each and they really were just meat with a large dollop of hommus. I recall getting a bit more salad and vege at Beirut Express and spending a little less cash. The ambience is also better at Beirut Express.

Post dining note - hubby's tummy was a bit off this morning. O-oh!

So keep a check on prices - there are enough dining options on Edgware Rd to shop around. My experience so far is that tastes are comparable (and all good) so decide on price, atmosphere and perhaps booze :)
