Union Cafe London Reviews

Nice work - Unlike a previous reviewer's experience, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us without a reservation when the restaurant seemed packed, rearranging a number of tables, and from then onwards the service was excellent - prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. The food was good, the prices are a bit steep but not exorbitant, and our evening was pleasant all round.

Could do better - I want to like this place, I really do. It's close to my place of work and from the outside it looks like the type of place I'd like to eat in - cool, mellow, open kitchen, lots of wood and glass. I've been here three times now and each time I've left feeling slightly disappointed or downright annoyed. The food is "safe" (read "bland" and go for the sausages) and the service not particularly friendly or efficient when I've visited. One particularly stroppy waitress brought the wrong bottle of wine to the table and when it was politely brought to her attention she had the audacity to tell my colleague that she should have spoken more clearly! Ambiance: 4/10. It gets noisy when full of "suits" eating on expenses at lunchtime (The Union's staple custom, I'll wager), and even when it's empty, woe betide anyone who wanders in off the street without a reservation. And for so unimaginative a menu, it's not a cheap eat. With so many restaurants vying for custom in and around Marylebone High Street, this one gets a resounding COULD DO BETTER.

Top banana - Simple and elegant, the restaurant is far enough from Oxford St and slightly hidden to mean that people do not stumble on this culinary oasis by chance. The menu is not extensive and the ambiance not flamboyant but for good quality food and wine the place is hard to beat. The burger was a beauty but not in the same league as my dining companion. Just one regret is not having extracted any Heinz tomato ketchup from the bottle. What's the secret? Apparently there is brunch on Sundays between 11 and 4 with Marys.
