The Golden Hind London Reviews

Not deserving of awards, but BYOB - For ambience, this place gets 10/10 (even though everyone commented I smelled like a fish n chip shop afterwards). It's an old school place that does old school fish n' chips - I loved the traditional British caff feel (even though it's not run by Brits).

We have a monthly scampi lunch at work, where we try somewhere new that does our favourite British lunch. We thought we'd try the Golden Hind because it won so many awards, but the chips weren't all that (not posh lovely OR chip shop lovely) and the scampi was overcooked.

The best thing about it is that it's BYOB. There's a Tesco round the corner on Marylebone High Street so you can pick up a cheap 660mml beer - counteracts the pricy food..

Top tip - share chips. Especially if you want to have dessert ;)

Fish with a smile - The Golden Hind is one of those small long-standing establishments with a very familial atmosphere. It was started in 1914 (yeah, a loooooong time ago!!), and has changed hands about five times since then. It serves ONLY fish, so non-pescatarians and vegetarians can go elsewhere if they're hungry. But if you love fish like I do, then what a place it is! The fish (I had haddock, but the cod's supposed to be good too - and they have 5 or 6 others to choose from), was fried to just the right amount in a very tasty batter. Sides range from the usual chips to mushy or hard peas, and pickled onions. The service is exemplary - the current Greek owner is a most jovial chap who will remind you of your grandfather. The place is usually filled with regulars, as can be noted from the cheerful greetings most of the staff give to the people who walk in. It's also almost always crowded (it was when I went, and my friend, who is a regular, said that he always has to wait). You are allowed to bring your own alcohol, and the main courses cost around 7 quid.

I'll be looking for a place that serves better fish than The Golden Hind, but I may not succeed!
