The Anchor & Hope London Reviews

the Poms and their Gastro pubs... - Top wine list and food to match. The Poms still go on about their Gastro Pubs where in Australia good pubs that serve fine food with a well selected wine list are a dime a dozen. Either way the place is generally always packed so best to go with reservation or outside the times when the suits come out to play. Unpretentious service but with good wine and food knowledge to boot. Look past the srubbishpy paper menus with greasy finger stains and crumbs and peer into its content. Outstanding... MC

Prepare to wait - I can never think of anywhere to eat in London Bridge but after walking round the Tate Modern on Saturday afternoon it occured to me that we could go to the Anchor & Hope. I've heard good things about it and they don't take bookings, which was quite perfect for us as we're so disorganised! We got there at around 6pm and it was pretty packed, no tables were free in the dining room. I asked for my name to be added to the waiting list and I was told it would be an hour - not a problem, there was beer to be drunk.

After about an hour, the server who took my name came to find me and we were seated. We were sat with another couple sharing the table which was fine by us. We had crab on toast and potted shrimps with toast to start. These were both excellent and healthy portions too. For my main I had the pork with boulangere potatoes - the portion was huge; the pork was cooked perfectly.

We had a really good time here - the serving staff were really friendly and attentive. The staff behind the bar also seemed genuinely like they were enjoying themselves which is something of a rarity in London.

The meal wasn't cheap - we had a bottle of wine, starters and mains and a dessert to share and coffee - oh, and a couple of cognacs - which came to £40 a head with tip, but it was well worth it.

Hearty goodness - We finally made it to the Anchor and Hope. Having tried for dinner before and failed, this time we went for lunch on a Saturday. Although there was a wait for the main dining room we managed a table in the bar which worked just as well.

We went straight for the main courses - winter warmers of braised mutton with peas for me, and pork loin and mashes swede for the hubby. The mutton was melt in the mouth, and a large portion which I was not able to finish. Hubby's pork loin was gobbled up, and he enjoyed the hot mustard kick served up on the side. We also ordered yummy sides of puy lentils and greens. Delicious.

Still room so we shared a nutty marmalade bakewell tart and vanilla ice cream. Perfect sugar rush to get us around the Hayward Gallery for the afternoon.

Good food but as there is no booking you'll have a long wait for dinner if you are not early, so recommend heading there for lunch instead.

Take your Hope with you... - .. and maybe a backup list of restaurants just in case you can't get a table!

We were headed for the highly-tipped Anchor & Hope for a bite before heading to the O2. Friends J&B arrived at 6.30pm to reserve a table. On a Thursday night, the pub was heaving and the dining room was full, with a long list of people waiting to be fed. I was craving the slow roast lamb that people had raved about but, by 7.30pm it didn't look like we were going to get fed, so we sadly had to look for other options.

Directly across the road is Tas (Turkish) and Livebait. We opted for Tas. If you've seen my review of Tas, you'll know how this all worked out :-)

We're planning on getting back to the Anchor & Hope, maybe for a weekend lunch. Gotta try that lamb!

Fantastic - Had a group of 8, but we got there around 6 found seats in the bar and worked up an appetite. Seated within an hour.

The Slow roasted lamb shared between 2-6 still gets my mouth watering. Can't remember much about anyone else's meal as I was too focused on the lamb. The rest of the menu looked excellent though.

All-time favourite - The Anchor and Hope can always be relied upon to provide and surprise with amazing food. The no-bookings policy means it's tough to get a table if you turn up late, but the it's well worth the wait.
If the slow-roasted lamb is on the menu, then do yourself a favour and order it. You will not be disappointed.

A must-visit in London - The best gastropub in London. Consistently great food and a warm, unpretentious atmosphere. Greatness comes with a price, though. You can get there too late and be shut out for dinner pretty easily. Also, closed on Sunday which is a super drag.
