St Mary's Abbey was founded in 1088, by King William Rufus. From that time onwards for another 450 years it was one of the most wealthiest and powerful abbey in the north. The monks who were stationed here originally came from Lastingham, which is where they lived and learnt the Benedictine Rule. In 1132 many of the monks left in order to found the Cisterion Fountains Abbey. St Mary's was still a Benedictine monastery until 1539. The building now is home to the Yorkshire museum.
