The One O'Clock Gun dates from 1846, when an Edinburgh banker on a trip to Paris saw a miniature time gun being fired daily in the Palais Royal gardens. In 1852 a time ball was erected on the top of Nelson's monument, so that captains of ships could all adjust their maritime clocks to the time at One O'Clock. In 1858 John Hewat had the idea that the clock should also provide an audible signal to help in bad weather. Every day (except Sunday) since June 1861, the gun is fired.
