Canongate Kirk was built in 1688 on the orders of James VII, replacing the chapel at Holyrood Abbey, which had previously housed the local congregation. The churchyard is the resting place of many famous Scotsmen, including economist Adam Smith and poet Robert Fergusson. The Kirk opens in the summer months for tourists and provides guide booklets in over 20 languages. Yet all year round it plays hosts to classical concerts and recitals - specialities being organ, choral and small ensembles.
