La Poule Au Pot is said to be one of the most romantic restaurants in London, something which depends on the individual, but it is certainly one of the most authentically French. The cuisine is very rustic and wine is served in enormous carafe bottles - you pay for the amount you manage to consume rather than the entire bottle.

La Poule Au Pot London Reviews

Sunshine and wine - We descended on La Poule Au Pot a few weeks ago on a very sunny Saturday, having requested a table outside. Sitting in the little square in SW1 under the umbrellas, you really do feel like you are on holiday in the south of France. The slightly surly waiters also add to the atmosphere – Tres Bien! A short a la carte menu was given to us, but we decided to go for the set menu. However, the waiter then proceeded to recite off the 10 different options for each course (none listed on the printed menu) which was rather confusing – it would have been helpful to have had them in writing somewhere so we could decide in peace – and he did slightly huff when we asked him to repeat the starters. Forgive us, we are all over 30 and short term memory is not what it used to be.... But with the sun shining and the wine and conversation flowing we ignored this and concentrated on enjoying the afternoon ahead. I opted for onion tart to start which was delicious – the flakiest crumbliest pastry encasing a creamy custard filling dotted with caramelized onions. Other starters around the table included cheese quiche (similar to the tart, but full of rich cheesy goodness), and chicken liver pate. Mains included grilled tarragon chicken, steak (cooked the French way – i.e. still quivering), and sea bream. Two of us opted for desserts which included two amusingly positioned scoops of lemon sorbet and tarte tatin. None of the food was amazing, but it was more than sufficient. Whilst the outside seating is all spacious tables, sunshine and luscious greenery, inside is a different world – wood panelling, mismatched chairs and a dark and cosy feel – perfect in winter I assume. The trip to the downstairs loos did slightly resemble a trip to the London dungeons, and I nearly fell into the vegetable store on the way out by opening a wrong door (no, it had nothing to do with the wine consumed). All in all, a lovely place to spend a long lazy lunch.

French, charming, affordable - In the elite Belgravia is a charming little French restuarant that literally makes you feel like you're in France.

All the tables are close together, so it's very intimate, and all with a small rose pot, lighted candles and blue or red French china. Very quaint and charming.

The waitstaff are extremely attentive but not over the top and no rudeness whatsoever. We had a small group and were on a tight schedule, and they accomodated us perfectly.

The food is simple and classic French. The menu appears to change daily with what's fresh b/c we weren't given menus, but rather told what they have. Starters such as French onion soup; rocket with mushrooms and cheese; or asparagas served to order. Mains such a beef steak and fries (of course); chicken with creamy taragon sauce; poached salmon; and grilled skate or tuna. Everyone devoured their meal and no one left a bite left on the plate. A good sign.

For 6 people the cost was £150 but only a half bottle of wine and no coffee or desserts. Very reasonbly priced. I will definitely be back... need to take hubby there.

Tasty french food (& waiters) - This place serves hearty, traditional french food - the environment is also very traditional with tables crowded closely together, spilling onto the street, dried vines hanging about the place and edith piaf on the stereo! The waiters provide some pretty good eye candy too. If you know your bouillabaisse from your magret de canard (the menu is all in french), then this is the place for you. A little difficult to find, but definetly worth it.
