Nearly lives up to its promise - Described on its website as "dramatically different from the dairy-based cooking of the average high street Indian restaurant", Indali Lounge on Baker St has a lot to live up to. The idea is great: ditch the high fat, butter and ghee content of traditional Indian cuisine and replace it with yoghurts and herbal spices. Result: eat as much fab Indian food as you like and don't pile on the pounds. Well, the food was certainly lighter than the usual fare. Portions were small and not particularly cheap, but we did leave the restaurant feeling less bloated than normal. Food presentation isn't great. My starter of scallops consisted of 3 very small scallops and a bit of tasteless white stringy stuff (cost @ £4). The Original Butter Chicken Tikka Indali (which is utterly butterless and has a patent pending, no less) consisted of 6 cubes of chicken swimming in what looked like tomato soup. It tasted fine but looked homemade (cost: £9.80). As for service, well haphazard and confused to say the least. The waiter was perfectly pleasant, but he seemed to have as much trouble understanding us as we had understanding him. Dinner for 9, including a couple of bottles of wine, worked out @ £40 per head. Decor: '80s disco - all purple and mirrors, but not unpleasant, and if they were going for nostalgia it works a treat. It's a new concept and a new restaurant in an area that's generally quiet on weekday evenings, so I shall perhaps give it another chance when it has had time to settle down. I wasn't blown away, however, and the only "drama" was finding the right coat at the end of the evening.
