Get used to bureaucracy! - Ah, I miss getting my Visa at the High Commission. Its old school wooden paneling reminded me of the administrative buildings in Mumbai which haven’t been changed since the time of the British. Anyway like everything these days, visa applications have been outsourced to VFS Global so now you have to go to Goswell Road (or Victoria).
Before getting there it is a bit of a nightmare. The online application form seems like a good idea apart from the fact that it spent all of yesterday in FAIL mode and wouldn’t let me access my form to print. It gives you an appointment date but not an appointment time. The phone number is 90p a minute so I didn’t call but no one replies to your emails. But never fear, like everything to do with India, everything is alright in the end. The office has photo booth, spare forms and photocopier so you should be okay.
Top tip: If you want to be out quickly then get there early. It opens at 8:30 – I got there at 8:10 and there was already a queue, but I got out at about 9:10 which wasn’t too bad. Haven’t picked up my passport yet, so we’ll know how good it really is when I get my passport back – hopefully with correct visa. Also, a tip for ex-Indian nationals who want a long tourist visa (1yr/5yrs) you now need proof of Indian origin, so an Indian passport, birth certificate etc – it’s not clear that you need this online. I had to get a standard tourist visa in the end, which means I’ll be back at Goswell Road again soon!
