Beer and board games - The Pembury is a magnet for serious beer-lovers, but well worth a visit for those who just want to spend a relaxing evening in a comfy pub where they can hear themselves think.
The ales are the real stars of the show here, with a carefully-kept selection from Milton brewery as well as many bottled beers and (I'm told) a couple of lagers on tap. There's always something new to try, however, and plenty of guest beers served up by knowledgeable staff. A pint is priced pretty reasonably for London - under £3 for a decent drink.
The interior is open and light, which gives the pub a sort of daytime feel - definitely not your typical wood-and-flock-wallpaper-lined cavern. The chunky old wooden furniture and mismatched chairs give it a bit of character, along with the impressive list of board games available to borrow. The clientele is fairly mixed, from old stalwarts working their way through the guest ales at the bar, to local kids and Hackney's finest literati, plus a group of black-clad boardgamers who descend en masse on Sunday evenings. Towards the end of a good evening there's a friendly buzz around the place, but due to being spacious and airy it never gets claustrophobic or too noisy - there's also no piped music or fruit machines. If you like beer that you can taste and conversation that you can hear without straining, the Pembury's for you.

Relaxed, friendly quality beer pub. - I'm amazed this is the first review of this superb Hackney boozer.
The Pembury Tavern was closed for many years, but re-opened a few years back under the management of Individual Pubs - who also run the Oakdale Arms in Haringey. The interior is clean and modern, yet fairly traditional. It's a large, open single bar. When it first opened, it could be lacking in atmosphere somewhat, but as it has become more popular this has stopped being a problem.
The Pembury is all about quality beer, in particular cask ale (aka Real Ale - although I prefer not to use that label as it carries so many negative connotations). There are numerous handpumps, and in my experience you'd be unlucky not to see at least 8 of these in operation. They carry many of the Milton ales from Cambridge, but also feature an ever changing range of ales from microbreweries from all over the UK, as well as real cider. In my experience, it's usually in excellent condition. There is also a superb range of bottled beers from all over the world (make sure you try the extraordinary Schlenkerla Rauchbier if you haven't had it before) as well as two keg fonts dispensing Taddington Moravka (a superb unpasteurised Czech-style lager brewed in Derbyshire) and Blanche De Bruxelles (a delicious Belgian witbier). As if that wasn't enough, there's a huge range of whisky and other spirits, as well as mulled mead in the winter!
They also serve food from 12-3pm and 6-9pm, and I've always enjoyed my meals here.
Now it has been around for a few years, it seems to be a popular place, but the open bar space means it never feels uncomfortable. There's no music in the bar (their license doesn't allow it), but I don't have a problem with this at all.
I can't recommend this place highly enough.
