Time to step it up... - I have been frequenting this place regularly since moving to South East London eighteen months ago. What started as a cool bar/pub type of place serving modern European food unfortunately has been in slow decline ever since: The decor is starting to look tired, and service has really gone to the dogs. At the beginning we had dinner and Sunday lunch here a couple of times and the food was pretty good. But since being put off the service of late, we’ve not wanted to venture back for food. On a recent visit, it took quite some time to be served by the bar staff despite the fact that the place was completely empty. I then requested whether my gin cocktail to be made with Hendricks instead of the non descript house gin that was mentioned on the menu. The bar man looked completely confused and then just plainly said "No, can't do that". When I asked why not, he told me it would be too complicated to work out the new pricing (despite the fact that premium spirits simply carried a £1.50 surcharge on the drinks menu).. So much for trying to cater to your customers!
Another recent visit on a Saturday and I ordered a half of Hoegarden and requested a slice of lemon... alas, the place didn't have any lemons because "We've not had time to go out and buy supplies" - despite again being completely empty on a Saturday afternoon. I’ve found lately that the bar staff seem more interested in chatting amongst themselves than serving their customers.
It's a real shame, because I really liked what the Dark Horse is trying to be. Here’s hoping they pull their socks up...
