Life on Mars. - My name is Tony Stilling, I went to sleep in 2008 and woke up in 1973. Am I in a coma? Am I mad? Or am I just staying at the Sheraton Heathrow?
I know I can't expect every hotel to magically receive a full refurbishment but this place is a homage to everything that was bad about the 70s. From the abundant gold and brass trim to the hallucinatory carpeting that lines the corridors to the rooms this place could almost be classed as ironic retro.
This is the second of the Heathrow Sheratons I've stayed in this week and I have to say on balance the Skyline is where you should take your business. However at GBP90 for a room for the night, it is actually quite a bargain if you need a full service hotel with inclusive breakfast to stay. Given that the Travelodge costs only a few quid less and doesn't include any food suddenly the four star (ha, really!?) Sheraton makes a lot of sense.
The rooms are recieving a make over and I apparently got one of these rooms. I struggled to see what the refurb was, perhaps they are going for the retro look. But aesthetics aside the bed was very comfortable, the breakfast quite tasty and the staff friendly and efficient.
There is also a small gym with a selection of cardio, cable machines and free weights.
You will find Airline crew of every nationality propping up the bar to the wee small hours (I hope they manage to sober up before flying the plane!) as well as a coterie of Japanese tourists excitedly taking pictures of every rubbishpy nook and run down cranny. But that is part of the charm of this place.
I say don your loudest shirt, pull on those flares that you bought at Portobello Market in 2002 in anticipation of the oft predicted come back, grow a moustache like Bert Reynolds and check in!
