Miller's Academy London Reviews

Eclectic Intellectualism - Miller's Academy is pretty sweet. Founded by some eccentric millionaire antiques dealer (or something), the place is a fun intellectual salon in Notting Hill that convenes regular lectures and interesting speakers to come to their club. The space is split into two areas, the downstairs lecture hall (which is a bit awkwardly laid-out, but pretty atmospheric nonetheless) and the upstairs library and dining/drawing room.
The first thing that happens when you walk in (after forking over the cash if you haven't already registered) is your drink order is taken and brought to you in your seat - nice! They also have a house brand of gin, which is quite outrageous, and makes for a great g&t. Once things get going, the speaker goes on about whatever subject (when I went it was on politics in Pakistan) for about an hour before the group repairs to the salon upstairs.
If you didn't already know that the guy who runs the place was an antique collector, you'd know for sure once you got upstairs! The place is absolutely crammed with curios (or junk, depending on your point of view), busts, paintings, old leather bound tomes, porcelain vases, you name it. A buffet style dinner was served that was absolutely fine (although nothing to write home about, either), and more drinking carries the conversation on late into the night.
Although it's a members club (~£175/yr), you can also show up for events without a membership provided there are available seats. The mixture of people was a bit skewed towards an older demographic, but my friend and I weren't the only ones under 50, which allowed for some interesting discussion. All in all, a good find!
