The Crooked Billet in Stoke Row is now one of England's finest and most traditional country inns. Built in 1642 it was once the hideout of notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, who was romantically attached to the landlord's daughter, Bess. It operated as a smallholding, selling locally produced ale from its tiny cellar. The original cellar is still a feature today.

Quintessentially English - This is the perfect country pub in my book: a ye olde building full of wonkiness, mismatched furniture, creaky floors and low beams. Ok it's a nightmare to find, but that doesn't deter people. You have to snake your way through winding and precariously narrow country lanes, avoiding the odd sheep or farmer, before you eventually come across it hidden amongst the greenery. Once you get to the pub all the stresses of daily life simply melt away, in fact you almost feel you are in an ad for Pimms here.
I've been here several times - once for dinner (whilst staying at nearby Henley), and for several Sunday lunches. No visit has disappointed. The menu brims with gastro chic items like oysters, scallops, duck and steaks - portions are generous. Remember to save room for dessert or the cheese plate - This place makes you a complete glutton.
A great wine list rounds off the meal nicely, and staff are friendly and accommodating. Booking ahead is recommended at the weekends.
This pub is great all year round - in the winter it is warm and toasty with roaring fires. In summer you can spill out into the garden and look across the English hedges teaming with butterflies and enjoy the sounds of the countryside. Idyllic.
