The Phoenix is a popular pub located off the King's Road, serving a good selection of ales and lagers, wines and spirits as well as good contemporary British food. There is seating available outside in the summer.

Out of the ashes emerged . . . - This renovated, neighbourhood pub seemed promising one night when I dropped in for a pint. Despite the litany of stern house rules listed on a blackboard outside, the interior had a welcoming air. One patron had a couple of pooches with him at the bar, which gave the place a bit of a cosy feel.

The small dining room area was quite full, and at a glance the food looked good so I decided to give it a try one Saturday at lunchtime with some friends.

Big mistake.

The service was appalling. Although the staff were friendly, we waited for at least 20 minutes to order and at least half an hour for our meals.

We noticed that other people who sat down after us had their orders taken and were served food before we were.

The food wasn't very good. I had ordered a toasted roast beef sandwich and when it finally arrived the bread wasn't toasted. There was also string in the sandwich, which was very disconcerting.

My friends ordered eggs Benedict, which they said were cold. There was no garnish on their plates, so the presentation was sparse and unattractive.

The prices weren't horrendously high, but it really wasn't worth the money.

After-lunch cappuccinos took so long to arrive that I finally went up to the bar and cancelled them.

We went to a coffee place off the Duke of York Square instead.

The Phoenix is worth a visit for drinks and perhaps a packet of crisps if you happen to be in the area, but I wouldn't bother dining there again.
