East meets SW2 - Fujiyama used to be one of my favourite restaurants when I lived in Brixton many moons ago as a student. Back again for a night out here last week and I was comforted to see that the place is still standing, and more importantly still busy and buzzing. The set up is like Wagamamas – all communal squashed tables, full of friendly laid back cool South London folks. You can choose from noodles, rice dishes, sushi, sashimi or more substantial bento boxes. We opted for a big selection of little dishes so we could try as many different things as possible. To start we opted for some chicken gyoza (good but not great) and some vegetable tempura bites (nice light batter). This was followed by spider crab rolls (ok, a bit stingy with the spider crab filling), scallop rolls (again ok), and some salmon sashimi (very nice). Accompanied by a bottle of mid priced Sauvignon, the dinner came (for two) to £25 a head - no bad considering the volume of food and the fact we couldn’t finish all of it. It’s not gourmet, and if you really want amazing sushi or sashimi you can find much better, but it’s certainly a good option if you are out in Brixton.
