Zizzi is a chain of traditional Italian pizza and pasta restaurants that cook all their pizzas in wood burning ovens. Guests are advised to phone for details about catering for private parties and seating on the pavement area is provided, weather permitting. A takeaway menu is available.

Battle of the Chains - London's 3 main gourmet-ish pizza chains, Pizza Express, Zizzi, and ASK, seem to be duking it out everywhere you look. In Covent Garden, heavyweight Pizza Express sits directly across the street from Zizzi, looking like a Starbucksian attempt to steal customers. Yet, despite appearances, they aren't even competing, as all 3 are owned by the same corporation, Gondola holdings. This explains several things: (1) why it can be nearly impossible to remember which one I ate at on a particular occasion, (2) why I can never find "that one I liked last time" on the menu (because I was probably at one of the other places), and (3) why all 3 have a similar air of prepackaged-upscale.

After saying that, I always seem to like Zizzi the best. Perhaps it is the name, which boasts 3 zeds in the space of 5 letters, or perhaps it the the pretty wood pile as wall treatment in each restaurant, I'm not sure. The service always seems a little better, the crust a little better, and I love the prosciutto and rocket pizza. Or was that at ASK?
