E & O London Reviews

Not as Notting Hill as you think... - It's not as MEDIA as you're led to believe.

I've eaten here going on 5 years and not had a duff night out here yet.

Some dishes come and go but the Betel leaf / Pomegranite starter, tempura shrimp, baby back ribs and Black Cod are all stars.

and the Vodka Martinis....

Forget the hype...ignore the posers in their pork pie hats from the market...

Enjoy...

Great scene, good food - If you're looking for a scene or a place to impress your out of town friends, then this could be your place. The food & drinks are good - not great - but good enough that you won't leave being overly disappointed. The staff is nice & friendly and do give great recommendations.

Style + substance - Elle MacPherson Eats Here. Seriously, she actually eats. Here. The blackened miso cod really is that good. Needless to say the crowd is trendy, but the decor isn't too chi-chi, it's not overun with rude euro-trash crowd, and the hype is backed up with great food and nippy service.

Book in advance, this place is busy so it's rare to get a walk-in table. That said, if you're in the area the brief bar menu is also fantastic (don't miss the salt & pepper squid), and the wine and cocktail lists are long.

One pet peeve - tiny bathroom cubicles, huge doors... not much room to actually navigate ones way into the damn thing. C'est bizarre?

E and O-boy - We go every time we are in London. Last time we went a few times. Consistent creative cooking. Stay away from the simple, i.e. sushi, satay and go for the more unique sounding dishes. They are what makes the restaurant special and well worth it. The service has always been friendly and good. Friday and Saturday nights can be a bit crazy but that's how popular it is, and for us, there's a good reason.

delightful dim sum - You might be surprised by the 'moderate' price range I rated E&O. But on this my 3rd visit we decided to stick to a selection of dim sum and were pleasantly suprised at how economical our bill ended up. Each portion of dim sum is fairly substantial giving 2 people a decent share. We ordered 6 dim sum and 2 sides and we sadly could not finish 2 of the dishes cos we were stuffed! I adore the BBQ pork ribs, lovely sweet and sticky without being fatty like many other restaurant's versions. The salt and pepper squid is fabulous too, arriving in its own little newspaper cone with a delicious thai dipping sauce. And the side dish of stir fried sugar snaps had a lovely crunch. Whilst I have tasted and enjoyed the main courses here before, if you are looking for a dash of yummy pan-asian food without breaking the budget, then visit E&O and order the dim sum.

Yum Tum Thai - I love Thai food and have been to E&O a handful of times and love it. You can go in and get a few bites to tide you over -- without that overstuffed feeling, or you can order to your heart's content and fill yourself up. The food is always fresh and not too heavy -- with just the right amount of spice.

However, the bar is overrated, as the last time I was in there my martini was a thimble size and it took about 2 hours to make.

Very Notting Hill - I really like this restaurant for 3 reasons. 1.) I love this sort of Asian fusion food, and the food here is lovley. The menu is broad enough to cover everything from Dim Sum, to Sushi, currys, stirfrys and other specialties of the house, but doesn't take an hour to read nor do you need to have a good understanding of the Japanees language to understand it.
2.) although i love Hakkasan and Yauatcha this restaurant is much lighter and brighter. On any given evening you will see the Notting Hill crowd sipping coktails and nibbling Dim Sum on the pavement which in my opinion makes it a bit more relaxed and a little less "media"
3.) The service was great, they offered recomendations and were attentive without being over bearing.

Mini Hakkasan - I have been putting off going to E&O b/c of the other review that it's garbage, even though I've always heard good things about the place. I finally went the other day and I have to say, it's was pretty good. In my opinion, it's a mini version of Hakkasan, and I like Hakksan.

The service was attentive and everyone was friendly (we were there 4 hours and they never were impatient with us). And the food was really good. We ordered enough to feed a small army and we enjoyed all our dishes, but especially the chicken lettuce cups, the red curry with butternut squash and aubergine, the mushroom rolls, crispy aromatic duck served with pancakes and my favourite, the black cod. The food doesn't "wow" me other restaurants do as it's pretty typical for Asian fusion, but nonetheless, it deserves a good rating.

Asian fusion garbage - I have tried and tried again to like E & O. Given its close proximity to my house and the fact that in theory the menu sounds good, I have yet to overcome my distrust of this place. The food is completely mediocre. The cocktails are decent. Prices are slightly high, but doable if you got some decent food.

The final straw with this place was when I had a rotten prawn in my pad thai. I can no longer bear the thought of going here.
