Such a shame - I thought Abu Zaad would bring good things, I really did. It looks the part and is busy most of the time. What happened the Friday night I went, I don't know.
At the Shepards Bush end of Uxbridge Rd, Abu Zaad pitches itself as a Damascene restaurant (that's from Damascus for those less classically minded) and it certainly seems popular amongst the locals. One look at the menu should tell you why, and I'm not talking about the food. It's cheap, over half the price of say anywhere on Edgware Rd. The results were less pleasing.
We went in and were offered a table by the door. No thanks. We asked for another and were directed to a side room. No problem there except for the fact that we were more or less forgotten about.
We finally ordered drinks, thanks to a large party arriving to occupy the rest of the room, and to be fair, the orange and carrot juice was pretty good. However, when we told the waiter that we wanted to order food, he said that we should tell another waiter. Did he tell the other waiter? No. Did it matter anyway? No.
We variously ordered the Makloba, rice with lamb and aubergine, and the kabsa, rice with lamb shank, both of which came with salad and yogurt with mint and cucumber. The food came in under five minutes of ordering which was ok as we had plans but it was... just disappointing. Everything flavourless and dry, and obviously precooked and just reheated.
If you're in a hurry and don't mind poor food then Abu Zaad might be your place. Otherwise take the central line 5 stops to Marble Arch and take a walk up Edgware Rd.
