Star Of India has Imperial Roman decor and has live piano playing upstairs. The combination of both gives this large and smart restaurant an authentic atmosphere. The imaginative menu includes many new dishes. Catering for private parties of up to 30 guests is available upon request and a take away menu is also provided.

Star of India London Reviews

About like most stars these days... - pretty unremarkable.

We had the braised lamb shank, chicken with a coriander sauce, and salmon with dry spices. All were quite tasty, but not amazing. The naan and rice were typical, nothing great. The prices were HIGH, which might be the reason we were the only people in the restaurant for the entire lunch service.

Here’s the real tip. If you’re down this way, skip the Star of India and get yourself a few Red Velvet Cupcakes from Hummingbird Bakery just up Old Brompton Road.

Fancy Indian - Necessary? Sure - Having spent a year living in Bombay, I'm used to eating Indian food that is voluminous, tasty and cheap. There are plenty of Indian places around London that fit that description, although Star of India goes in a different direction. The food is all good, and many of the strong flavors and spices of Indian cuisine remain (which is a plus when compared to many of the previously mentioned Indian places that dumb down the flavors for Western palates), but still I sometimes feel weird having 'dressed up' Indian food. This is definitely not the place to dig in with your (right) hand, which I happily do at most Indian restaurants. Instead, it's much more buttoned up here, and portions are notably smaller, although I still found my meal filling and satisfying (the Cobra beer helped bring me back into a Bombay state of mind).
Decor is a bit peculiar, considering this is an Indian restaurant. The roof of the upstairs dining room is filled with an intricate Italiante fresco. Although I don't mind the lack of paintings of the Taj Mahal and idols of a reclining Ganesha and dancing Shiva, it's rather out of place to see Renaissance style painting here.
All in all, however, the food is good and a reasonably wide variety of Indian cuisines are presented. I especially liked my prawn biryani (a sort of Indian style fried rice, if you want to think about it that way), and never fail to get an order of poppers (papadum) to start out the meal.
