The Ritz Hotel London Reviews

Hot and expensive - We took the mother-in-law for tea and what a let-down it was. It was a warm day and absolutely roasting hot inside but the staff couldn't open the window or turn on the air conditioning and they wouldn't let me take off my jacket. So there I sat in a jacket and tie sweating like a pig eating the most expensive sandwich in the world that I had pre-paid for. There are much nicer tea places in London that this up-their-own-arses tourist trap.

An unforgetable birthday!! - I've always wanted to have tea at the Ritz Hotel. So, this year, for my 25th birthday, I decided to take my parents, my sister and myself there. Before going, I read several reviews on it (I was so excited!!)

Bookings have to made well ahead of time as it gets booked pretty quickly. So, if you want to go there for a special occassion, be sure to contact them at least 6 weeks ahead of time (AT LEAST!!!)I used the phone to make my reservation and the lady on the other end was absolutely lovely. She had to take my credit card details at the point of me making the reservation; I guess it's just to have a gurantee (for both parties). Cancellation policy is 48 hours or pay for the whole lot (but you wont get to enjoy it as you werent there!! So, my advise only cancel if it is ABSOLUTELY necessary!!)

When we got to the hotel, we were warmly welcomed by the hotel staff. Some of the reviews I had read said that the staff were rude and arrogant. This was not true from what I saw. The staff were very nice and very attentive without being intrusive. We did not feel like customers, instead we felt like guests.

We were directed to the cloak room to leave our coats and purses. The lady at the cloak room was also very nice and friendly. Before we actually sat at our table, we took a quick trip to the toilet. It looked more like a palace than a toilet. Personally, I would love to have that as my bedroom!! So, if you do go to the Ritz make sure you go to the toilet!! Even if you are funny about public toilets (I am!!), this one is worth seeing!!

When we were ready, we were shown to our table. We were offered 17 different types of tea. Here you could choose which ones you wanted to try. We also have several sandwiches and scones, served with clotted cream and strawberry preserve. Individually, each item that we were given was quite small. But, by the end of it all, we were pretty damn full!!

There was also a string quartet, that played while we dined. At one point, they started playing the 'happy birthday' song and came to my table with a cake. I knew that there would be a cake, but I had no idea that they would bring it like that. I was completely suprised by that in a good way, although slightly embarrassed at the same time.

I paid £49 per person. Slightly more expensive because I chose the celebration package, but it was worth every single penny!! My idea of Heaven!! I think that everyone should seriously go and experience this for themselves, even it's just the one time!!

And I forgot to mention; there is a strict dress code. Men to be wearing jackets, ties and smart shoes. Ladies to be wearing smart, casual. No trainers, no hoodies, no jeans and no caps!!

Afternoon tea at the ritz - I went to afternoon tea at the Ritz in June. The surroundings were amazing and the contrast between everyone outside in jeans and jumpers to everyone inside in dress's and dinner jackets really lent itself to the occasion. The tea was tea really. The little sandwichs were fab. The champagne was nice and the cakes were out of this world. We couldnt eat it all but we gave it our best shot. And the price was well worth it just to get inside and experience the glamour for a bit before heading back out for some serious retail therepy on Bond St.

Worth it for a treat or a celebration but not a man thing!

Higher than a splurge!! - Went there for a pre-dinner cocktail last night as it's just one of those places that you "have" to go to at least once in your life! The setting was amazing (so opulent), the string quartet was lovely, the people-watching it's lots of fun (arab prince anyone?) BUT at £17 for a cocktail it needs to be abso-bloody-lutely amazing...and...quite frankly it wasn't! Good for a one-off but won't be returning in any great hurry!

great service, lousy food - The Ritz's service is very similar to it's French counterpart in Place Vendome, however they fall flat on their food. The dining experience is stuffy, expensive and as bland as cardboard.

My suggestion is stay there, but do take away from the numerous great places nearby
