The Anchor is a three storey pub with a riverside terrace, that serves a selection of beers, wines and spirits as well as a variety of traditional English dishes from an a la carte menu in the upstairs restaurant. Catering for private parties of up to 80 guests is available upon request. The Oxford Dictionary was written in this establishment. The restaurant which is upstairs is opened from Midday until 8pm.

Non-Place - A while ago I bought this book by a guy called Mark Augé called Non Places - its pretty interesting and is all about how supermarkets, airports, service stations etc are non-places - they don't really really exist in any historical or cultural space - I mean you could be in a Tesco in Glasgow and it would be the same as the one in Greenwich - they're sort of built so that you can't really attach any emotion to them.

Anyway I kind of feel this way about the Anchor - yeah the building looks old but because its right on the water it has to appeal to everyone from tourists to office workers and everyone in between - it has no character of its own, which isn't such a bad thing but it makes it difficult to write a thrilling review of it.

Yes its on the water which is great and they've recently renovated the outdoor seating area so there are heaters and umbrellas - inside its kind of dark and labyrinthine but bland and there's nothing special behind the bar in terms of exotic drinks.

I guess this makes it a perfect place to catch up with someone as there's nothing to distract you from the conversation at hand but if you're looking for somewhere with a bit of ambience then I'd head elsewhere.
