Tate Modern London Reviews

densely interesting - The Tate Modern is the type of museum that one can easily make an entire day-trip around. Go over there, walk around the area, visit - even if just the free part (the permanent collection)- the floors and floors of modern works from different movements, have a coffee, a drink or even lunch or dinner at either of the two cafe/restaurants in the building, spend time looking at books in the bookstore, hang out in the loungy area over looking the giant Bourgeois spider, bring the kids - there are little stations where they can have fun, draw, and get active.
I was impressed to see that they have a couple of very contemporary works by artists from India (a new hot country on the art market map). Though the only criticism I have of them would be that there isn't enough Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Australian and Latin American works.
But otherwise, I've been there so many times, the building itself is a marvel. I have never done the same thing twice in there. There is always something new to discover.
And of course ongoing intriguing temporary exhibits.
permanent collection is free; coat check is free; staff are really nice; its a great place to visit for Londoners and tourists. i wish i could go there everyday!

immence environment - The building is art in its own right. I went once and would go again just for the experience sometimes there is good stuff on but most of it isn't really my cup of coco.

The environment is immense. One thing that struck me was the amount of space, it would be pretty cool to live there, you know have a bit of five aside football now and again.

My New Favorite Museum - Modern art can seem so inaccessible sometimes, but the Tate Modern somehow brings it down at least closer to the everyman level with interactive exhibits, open spaces that let you absorb the art and ask questions without feeling crowded or overwhelmed, and plenty of evocative and eye-catching pieces which cover a range of dramatically different styles.

The first must-see is Shibboleth, also known as the giant crack in the floor that spans the whole building. The size and scope of the project is quite impressive, and seeing people interact with the piece is really nice. We went and put our feet up to the edge, straddled it, crossed it, looked down it and walked most of its length. It was especially cute to see the little kids examining it, and waddling along with one foot on either side of the split.

The rest of the museum houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures as well as other forms of art. I loved the large-scale pieces and film exhibits, and every time I stopped to read the placards, I was intrigued by the questions the pieces brought up.

I didn’t go in the special exhibits, since I got there a bit late in the afternoon, but I would gladly go back for those and see everything else all over again, too.

Crack on - I like the Tate modern you know.

It's a shame they are a bit snooty about membership cards (don't try borrowing your boyfriends to get into the cafe... it won't work). But there you go.

Anyway. A jolly good show at the crack. I've never seen a Saturday so busy but it was the Lord Mayor's Show weekend.

Never plan more than 30 mins at the Tate. It's perfect for dipping into, but never fool yourself that there is a whole afternoon's entertainment.

Check out the crack as part of a London home-made walking tour that crosses the wobbly bridge and a wonder over to St Pauls and you'll have a lovely Saturday afternoon. Especially if you team it with picking up some scrummy groceries at Borough first.
