De Hems London Reviews

Dutch Courage Required - Usually if i'm up in town i'll avoid this place because i'm not a fan of crowds and this place is usually bursting at the seams.
This time it was a quiet tuesday night and the start of january, good time to go if you're like me.
I went for the orangjeboom(spelt incorrectly, I know there's a 'j' in there somewhere) and lucille tried a bottle of kwak.
This bar is a dutch themed bar and when there's football on you'll find lots of lager louts, doorstaff and hassled staff. So I went for a dutch lager and lucille was going for the malty belgian beer, there is a large selection here, It's mitchells and butlers owned so I never tend to get my hopes up too much.
This time though, apart from the fact they wouldn't serve the kwak in the correct glass because people keep stealing them (apparently) I was pleasantly surprised by the service.
Word of advice to the staff though, if you have the corrct glass, USE IT, it adds to the overall experience.

Beer and Bitterballen - De Hems has a good selection of beers and the bar staff seem to be knowledgeable about the different varieties, and are always happy to recommend something.

This Dutch themed pub does a good line in reasonably priced main meals and bar snacks, many of which are traditional Dutch dishes.

The Bitterballen was an interesting experience; deep fried balls of ragout, basically, and the sharing platters come with numerous different deep-fried goodies, including fried cheese. Not a healthy choice but complimentary to the vast quantities of beer and/or wine that I consume when I visit.

You can reserve tables, including some with comfy sofas, in the upstairs bar but they book up quickly, as it tends to get quite busy.

There are patio heaters at the front of the pub, so you can stand outside and smoke all evening if you like, although they’re not that warm.

De Hems is a great place if you want to meet people centrally. My only criticism is the music. Firstly, what on earth is is? They usually manage to go through a whole evening without playing a single song I’ve ever heard of, and most of their music inspires me to jig, do jazz-hands or pretend I’m playing a hurdy-gurdy.

It’s also oppressively loud. My friend once asked them to turn it down a little bit and was told they could turn it down a bit, ‘but it has to be quite loud, because it’s night time’. Ummm, right.

A random slice of Holland in China - I used to drink in here all the time when I was younger, and for some reason I'd been thinking about it a lot this week so I headed there last night. Mainly because it was close to the restaurant we were eating at and it was raining.

De Hems is a Dutch-themed pub in the middle of Chinatown. I used to drink in here when I was younger because I used to drink be obsessed with drinking Oranjeboom (or maybe just saying it), and they still have a decent selection of Dutch beers on tap (Heineken, Amstell, Fruli and of course Oranjeboom but also some lethal 8%er). If you're looking to indulge your inner beer connoisseur then you'd be better off going to the Dovetail in Clerkenwell, but if you're looking for a quick, decent pint in town, then head over the De Hems.

Although I'm not sure about the decor upstairs. And I think the downstairs closes at 12 (on a Monday) - but I can't be sure, I was pretty drunk.
