Stratton Cycles London Reviews

Excellent advice - "Exactly what it does on the tin if a little cramped"

My experiences could not have been more different than the last post. Yes the shop is cramped, there are too many bikes on show and on a Saturday morning there are always about 5 or 6 keen cyclists dropping off for that day repairs and local yummy mummies cetting Oscar's puncture repaired. I agree when the dogs are there a very rare occurrence it does feel a little closed in.

But and a big but the mechanics are all great particularly Jay and Mark - if he can get in front of a bike stand and the sales staff are knowledgeable and will let you test ride any of the bikes on display before you buy, both my daughters test rode several.

I needed solid advice on what wheels to buy and ended up with a set of Shimano RS20's for my road bike and a pair of wheels built on Tiagra hubs, Omega rims with a 36 spoke 3 cross lace, for the commuter, all for a very reasonable price. The display of accessories is a problem because Mark sells a lot of good value bikes but if you ask you get excellent advice on what to buy and whether the more expensive alternative is worth the money. For instance I was recommended the Bontrager hardcase tyres which where a massive improvement on the Armadillos and they are just as puncture resistant, a much better ride and cheaper!

If you want a clean uncluttered shop go to Halfords or Evans who are actually only interested in often overpriced new bike sales and charging over the odds for accessories and servicing/repairs.

Poor! - I have recently moved to the area and decided to visit this local bike shop as I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses rather than chains. I have also been a keen touring cyclist for over 40 years and have visited many shops across the country.

On entering the shop I found it to be untidy, unclean, and cluttered - a taped up broken window on the door, a filthy carpet (covered in dog hair and stained with oil), dusty, unorganised and quite unpleasant on the eye.
The shop felt claustrophobic due to the amount of stock on display, a combination of built cycles and boxed cycles did nothing to help the situation!!!
It was difficult to tell if the cycles on display were new, second-hand or repairs!
It was virtually impossible to look at the accessories on display as they were blocked from view by the mass of cycles on display.
As mentioned the layout of the shop is terrible and it does come across as looking like a second-hand or junk shop.
Viewing accessories was not helped either as the owner (I presume it was the owner of the shop) had two rather large dogs in the shop which blocked the way as well as boxed cycles blocking the accessories.
The owner also seemed more concerned with talking to another customer about his dogs than serving waiting customers.
I will not be visiting this cycle shop again in a hurry, if at all.

Your local bike experts - I'm a bit surprised that someone said they were unfriendly in there. In my experience they are really friendly and helpful. The owner I think is called Mark (see that's how friendly they are, I even know his name) - and they have an enthusiastic Italian guy there too.

Granted, their main clients appear to be yummy mummies needing someone to fix Hetty or Oscar's puncture. So perhaps they are less experienced when it comes to hydraulic disc brakes, or suspension systems. But whenever I've been in there with a genuine problem, they've been happy to help and will give you advice for nothing.

I am rebuilding a bike at the moment and I didn't have the expensive tools to remove the headset and bottom bracket - so they did it for me and also gave me advice on the precautions I should take before respraying my frame. Imagine getting that at Evans?

The only small criticism I would have is that, especially on Saturdays, they are so busy and their shop sometimes has people queuing up outside - you can feel like they want to get you in and out as quickly as possible. Fair enough given the limited space and the dumb questions some people seem to ask. All I can imagine is the other tipster here experienced the Saturday morning rush...

But go in and give them a go - they're a nice bunch.

Appauling - dont bother - If i can give one bit of advice dont use this place. I thought it would be nice to use the local facilities.

Unreliable, miserable and expensive - when the repair on the bike fails and you have to return it.

"its supposed to do that" is not a valid response I am afraid after seeking professional help with others
