Somerstown Coffee House London Reviews

Hospitalité française - The Somers Town Coffeehouse, Chalton Street, looks like a run of the mill 'ye old English' pub until you walk in the door.

The transformation made by the new French owners, sisters Sabine & Vanessa is rustic, hotchpotch and a vast improvement on the previous, rank and smelly 'work mans' pub of before.

The lounge bar is now a French / British dining room, with a large public bar with plenty of tables and seating - great place to share a good bottle of wine amongst friends (French of course). The staff have always been friendly and happy to serve, even if there is a slight language barrier at times, I only have O level French.

The beer is cold, crisp and served by handsome young men or women, wearing long white kitchen aprons, in sparkling clean and polished glasses. The loo's are spotless, with potted plants and a Belfast basin, pavement seating at the front on Chalton Street, plus a courtyard behind the bar.

The opening times have been a bit hit and miss, as the Sisters have been finding their market, the pub used to attract the wrong type customers, (hoddies, locals, workmen in work gear, dealers etc), but since Sabine & Vanessa have 'discouraged' such customers and gained the trust of the local businesses, residents, workers, they have built up a good loyal customer base with their eclectic mix of British and French fare, they are now open weekends. Once in the door, you have to ask yourself, am I in Somers Town?

Enjoy...

Cozy Local - the Somerstown Coffee House is not an overly ambitious pub. It does have an attached restaurant, and it does offer some off-the-beaten track beverages (from wines to the beer selection), but it is at its heart a local joint. And I'm happy with that! This is a great place to duck into on the way home for a pint, or else to spend an afternoon reading a book and nursing a cup of coffee.
Prices are rather standard, but selection is more generous, including fun choices like Red Stripe on tap (Yay Beer!). Be aware that this local has somewhat funny hours, so it may not be open at what seems like a very ordinary time (especially on the weekends). It may be prudent to call ahead, or else get to know the schedule if you're a local.
