Underground trauma - I already have the plaster. I could even chose a color- so I went for black one as it's quite universal and suits to my clothes:) I was really glad that I would be able to go out, walk and travel again. Finally. My mood changed drastically when I had to use the tube as disabled for the first time. It has been one of the most traumatic experience in my life. It is so shocking that the most obvious elements of my reality started to be a problem.
Obviously, not all London stations have lifts so mostly I had to use the stairs. You can't even imagine what a challenge that was. I had an impression that I was an obstacle for the rest of commuters and I was the only person who wasn't in a hurry- what was annoying them (I saw those faces...). The other and the most important thing was trains themselves. Not all of them are well designed for disabled's needs (f.e. District Line)- but some new models like Picadilly line trains are really great and they even have enough space for wheelchair users. Anyway, to get in to overcrowded train or get off at overcrowded station at peak hours is simply impossible.
I know that I don't have huge influence on the issue of disabled access on the London Underground- I just want to make you aware that travelling with crutches, white stick or wheelchair might be a nightmare. For me it will be 2 stressful months for the others- all life.
