Overpriced and overloud - Part of me really wanted to love the Brickhouse - the concept of a late-night supper club with entertainment sounds really interesting on paper... but there were just too many things that let the place down:

The food - some nice touches, particularly the wasabi tuna; but we were expecting something a little more special for the price of the dishes
The service - our waiter was great, friendly and helpful, but he disappeared after about an hour (call me fussy, but I like to have the same waiter for the duration of my meal)
The delay - it was more than an hour before any food arrived; whilst a laid back, relaxed approach is part of the experience - not to keep your customers gently aware of this is not (but in fairness, we were offered a free round of drinks)
The sound - the band weren't bad, but they were just way too loud; we couldn't hear each other speak across the table - not really the background entertainment you'd expect.

Perhaps things will improve over time, but I won't be returning any time soon.

Fabulous food, hideous atmosphere - We were really looking forward to our melange of entertainment and delicious treats at the recently opened Brickhouse, opposite the Truman Brewery on Bricklane. Now, if you're a 'back-to-basics' kinda diner, maybe you wouldn't mind that everything apart from the food was horrific, but I'm happy to say, I'm not one of those. So, it's largely a thumbs down for the Brickhouse.

One thing to bear in mind, however, is that I've not been to Shoreditch for a little while, and maybe got out of the quirky vibe a little. For £60 per head, I expected more though.

The worst thing about the Brickhouse was probably the lighting, and the vibe. It was just stark, and not in a funky way. Plastic 'bucket chairs' were so uncomfortable, the walls bare and white, the floor hard and cold, and everyone dining there looked freezing. The lights from the kitchen serving 'hatch' were unbelievably bright and shone in the eyes of half the diners, the chef would frequently come and 'hang out' front of house, and a unnecessarily loud doorbell kept interupting our evening from the front door.

The act. So, Roxy Velvet was doing a birdcage burlesque number. I'm sorry to be fussy, but it just was set so badly and she kept dropping things and being generally clumsy and unbecoming. It was one of those uncomfortable performances that left us all glancing at our fellow diners to see if they too, couldn't quite believe what a dogs dinner they were witnessing.

I must say something nice about this place though, the Foie Gras was the best I've ever tested. The food and wine was second to none, hats off to the Brickhouse chef. But if I was him, I would definatly go and get a job somewhere that deserves such quality. The Brickhouse tried hard and fails appaulingly.

DVT symptoms - When I think of The Brickhouse, Dita Von Teese instantly springs to mind simply because a group of us met some burlesque dancers there whom were carrying a python around the restaurant and letting it casually wriggle between the knives and forks of patrons. Quite a strange sight let me say.

Once I move beyond the thoughts of burlesque, there are so many aspects to this venue which I love.

The food was brilliant. One of my friend's beef fillet was over cooked but they fixed the situation by swapping it.

The wine list was not overly extensive but comfortably caters for everyone.

The service was excellent. Our waitress was extremely friendly, quipped with a few quirky comments now and again, and maintained her professionalism at all times.

The restaurant spans over 2 floors, the second level (1st floor) being more of a mezzanine made up of booths. Througout the various months they have a schedule of performances such as silent films, acrobatic displays, musical performances, short plays, and of course, burlesque dancing.

The decor is neutral, white evrywhere, and the furniture is contemporary designer. I was also impressed with the lighting :)

Finally, at some time around 11pm ppl can move up to the 2nd Level where a DJ and another bar resides. This level is relatively small and is made up of a small dancefloor and a series of sofa like seating that quite frankly resembles a double bed.

Acrobatic Adventure - After having trouble finding it (the only directions we were given on Brick Lane were 'its up there, follow the light' - not helpful until we saw a shining, bright light above a doorway) we were glad to be inside. Its a really cool space, 3 floors high with a cute bar at the back of the ground floor, restaurant on ground and first and then another bar on the third balcony (more of that later). Whilst we were having drinks at the bar we were entertained by a lady and her snake and during dinner an acrobat tumbled down some material in the 3 storey void - great fun! But the main attraction here is the food, it is much more high end than you would expect from the space. I had scallops which were divine, beautifully cooked but the presentation makes it feel as if its trying alittle bit too hard. After dinner we retired to the 3rd balcony, where there was a dj and a series of double beds to lounge on - quite fun, but call me an old fart but I prefer a comfy chair and a chinwag! What with the exceptional service, the fun space, great food and entertainment, it was a great evening out and I would reccommend a visit.
