Forgive my American Ignorance... - I just don't understand what I'm supposed to love about this place. I do like the historical feel - it makes me think of a train station diner from 100 years ago. But the food is just bland. Well, okay, the mash is decent, and they give you an absolute mountain of it for almost no money, and I can appreciate that. The pies look delicious (until they pour the greenish liquor over them), but the crust is tough and flavorless, and the filling is in need of some sort of seasoning to add some interest. The liquor doesn't really help matters.

I admit that I am not bold enough to try the jellied eels - perhaps I'm missing out on something there. I was all ready to order them, but then I saw them. Bony fishy bits in Jell-O. No thank you. I'm guessing that locals have a very different view of this type of food - I know that I appreciate some really dubious food from my home town too - so perhaps I'm not the best judge. However, I don't think even a local would complain if they added some salt/pepper/butter/flavor to their pies. 12-10-07
