The Cross London Reviews

Under the arches - The Cross scores on many levels, because of its many arches it never feels too big, its low ceilings and small spaces gives it a cosy atmosphere and it is probably the only club where you can walk for 30 metres and every 6 metres or so dive into a different world of music (if all arches are being played in). This should be perfect for all the restless souls who like to cruise around or get bored easily (if channel zapping is your thing this is it). You can't get lost even if you try, no ups or downs, just either forward or backward into another arch or left for the outside or right for the bar, simple, nothing distracts from what you are there for. It has been a favourite in London for many years and thoroughly deserves its place among the cognoscenti. With loads of (now a bit worn out) palm trees and other foliage one may forget for a moment that after all you are in London and in a bit of a post industrial dodgy area. So it is somehow the best of all worlds and the concept the logical evolution from the mid-end nineties super club, super DJ kind of craze. As I said before, the DJ makes the night with his music, so that's what to look for but if you find 'the one' and the Cross is the venue, everybody will be right in the middle of it. Look out for Rap Saunders (SoulMates) if you like nicely delivered soulful, deep house or afterhours grooves and of course you can't miss the TDK festival at the end of August, where on 2 days, the Cross hosts > 100 DJs. Unfortunately, the Cross is set to disappear by the end of the year so make the most of it while you can. Any downsides?, not really, cloak room breaks the £2 barrier per item, irritating, and after a night out you can either walk back York Way for 10 minutes to Kings X (feasible but a bit of an obscure journey) or deal with the usual dodgy mini-cab but at least you queue for this in an orderly and civilised fashion, as we would expect in the UK. I almost forgot, of course, the Egg, the Key and Canvas are all in the same area, if the Cross was not enough, the Egg 5 minutes up the road could be the next stop.
