Some pretty stuff but very rude - I often pop into Source at Spitalfields (and occasionally their South Woodford branch) to peruse their offerings of shabby-chic novelties, which until fairly recently used to be priced very reasonably indeed.

However, upon my last few visits, where I was looking for finishing touches to my new bedroom, the service I was met with was so off-putting as to stop me from visiting again. Talked to like I was stupid and not worth bothering with, and generally made to feel unwelcome, I noticed that most other browsers were treated similarly. At one point a customer who wanted to buy something asked to speak to a manager at which point she was told by the lady serving her that as somebody who had "five successful businesses", she should "address whatever her problem was to her". Nice way to lose a customer!

Also, whilst you may be seduced by the overall cutesy nature of the goods on offer, I can assure you that most of it is entry-level, mass-produced toot aimed at the above mentioned shabby-chic market. Most of is available on mass from eBay traders looking to cash in on the movement, at half the price. (Think nicely-shaped MDF coated in white veneer).

Don't get me wrong, there are some lovely little gems in there, at different times of the year, such as ornaments, hooks, candles and cushions, ones that you wouldn't find elsewhere very easily.

But my advice would be that should you need to inquire about anything, to approach the till with caution - as you might just get your head bitten off! 01-03-09
