Perfect first time taste of Georgia - Just to update - I went here on 14 August and it's still great. I recommend asking for the khinkali as a starter - they were even better than the ones I had in Georgia.

Tbilisi was my first taste of Georgian cuisine, and despite comments from several native Georgians that the food served here is inauthentic, I believe that it is simply a bit Westernised and thus a perfect introduction to Georgian cuisine, especially for those who need to be eased in gently to new tastes.
For example, the saatsivi (chicken in walnut sauce) here is excellent, although in 'real' Georgian restaurants it is served cold and usually as a starter. Here's it's warm and is served as a main. I can see why native Georgians would be unhappy, but you have to realise that most locals would be rather upset to be served cold chicken. Even if the menu warned that it would be cold, how many Brits can you imagine that would order cold chicken?
Apart from the saatsivi, you should try the famous Georgian khachapuri bread with a selection of chunky dipping sauces. Other dishes were also fantastically flavoured, making frequent use of walnuts, pomegranate, coriander and other ingredients that combine for a unique and incredibly tasty experience.
The surroundings are very pleasant although don't be surprised if most tables are empty. Tbilisi also offers a chance to experience famous Georgian wines, although the selection is disappointingly small.
